I'm interested in installing a laptop mount. Due to the high cost of purchasing one I am curious if anyone has designed and built their own.
I would be installing it in a Freightliner Columbia, with a stick shifter.

While replying, would you also reflect on the legality of having an operational laptop in view and reach of the operator now that several jurisdictions have passed legislation banning hand held cell phones. I am all for laptop use while parked in a safety zone/rest area, etc., but the ones which are operational and "talking to you" while you drive are quite distracting from the primary task of safely navigating in the immediate traffic! The other on board navigational aids that are visual are also marginally legal in my opinion, but has anyone been fined or prosecuted for use of same? (If it sounds like your wife talking then it is unsafe!!!!!)

If it's used for navigating, it's acceptible. Not for emailing or chatting. As long as it the GPS on.

AT THIS TIME!???? This is subject to change if too many accidents occur that are attributed to the distraction of these devices.

I agree with you. If it's programed for directing you to a destination, & you aren't taking your eye's from the rd, this does work. It's just like having a co-pilot in the jump seat. It's when a driver is actually playing on it that will get it banned.

You may want to steer clear of Precision Mounting Technologies. We have been having a lot of troubles with the boards inside the dock and on warranty returns, you pay the freight.

That case over by Rochester, NY where 5 teenage girls died in the head on with a USX rig has been proven that the drivers cell phone received a text message and returned one immediately, then the 911 call came in 38 seconds later! The only thing they can't prove was which one of the 5 did the cell activity, but it is very obvious that the driver was inexperienced and made a very poor judgment to pass in a two lane road at night at high speed!
The cell phone activity was all the distraction necessary! And NY does already have a ban on hand held cell phone operation while driving!

i think i can help you out with the mount.
If you can give me some kind of idea of what you are looking for or a drawing i have some one that can make one for you out of acrylic. He make stuff out of acrylic for IBM.
We are in the same area my be i could see what you need .
OK call me a dinosaur but I believe that when you are driving you should have 110% of your attention on your DRIVING -------- I will not even change radio stations while I am moving. The most I will do is turn the radio on or off.
Just My Opinion ---- and 4.5 million miles without an accident shows I might be doing something right.

Thats a little overboard dont you think?

Reason:
the 2. one have 2 support arms who make it easyer to swing the NB in the bunk or. give a passenger more space.
I use it my Nb for Navi & Logbook (DDL) and on brake for TV, Video, internet, e-mail ....
More about my truck & technik in it later.

Since when is the safety of ALL the people on the road considered going overboard. Hell I do not own a cell phone and won't allow one to be turned on even in my car or SUV. As I said the very most I will do is turn the radio on or off ----- when I drive I focus my attention on what I am doing.

Is your truck rack and pinion steering or the old steering box style? The more steering play the less opportunity there is to do anything other than drive in my experience. I had some 6 inches of free play in my steering wheel and it was a handful to do much of anything other than look straight ahead and keep it dirty side down.
