Quebec provincial police hoping to find missing nine-year-old girl alive
August 22, 2007 - 11:28
TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. (CP) - Quebec provincial police say they have information that's leading them to believe a missing nine-year-old could still be alive.
Insp. Martin Prud'homme said Wednesday that officers don't have any solid information indicating that Cedrika Provencher is dead. The freckle-faced girl vanished three weeks ago and police have said she was helping a man look for a lost dog.
"We hope to find Cedrika alive," Prud'homme told Quebec all-news channel LCN. "There's nothing that indicates the contrary."
He said police have received reports of Cedrika being seen with a man since she disappeared.
Prud'homme also said that another girl has come forward to tell police she was approached by a man looking for a lost dog in this small city, midway between Montreal and Quebec City.
Three other girls have already told police they were approached by a man asking for help to find a lost dog.
Pina Arcamone of the Missing Children's Network said there's reason to hope the girl is alive.
"There's absolutely no reason to think the worst just yet," Arcamone said in an interview. "We need to encourage the public to be on the look out.
"If this is the case, the family has reason to be feeling cautiously optimistic, but if it doesn't pan out it's like losing her all over again."
Arcamone said she will be meeting with Cedrika's family on Friday in Trois-Rivieres.
The Missing Children's Network is offering emotional and technical support in the girl's disappearance and has been providing descriptions of the girl outside Quebec and in Europe.
Cedrika's father, Martin Provencher, is still participating in the volunteer searches for his daughter, Arcamone added.
An $80,000 reward has been offered to find the girl.
Psychologists will also be available to help schoolchildren when they return to class next week at Cedrika's school
