Caledon crash Claims Second Victim

A serious crash in Caledon from earlier in the week has turned even more tragic for a GTA family.

Isabel Diceglie, 23, succumbed to her injuries in hospital Saturday night, just days after her 19-year-old sister Vanessa was killed in the same collision. The day of the accident was Isabel's 23rd birthday.

The sisters had been travelling in a Honda Civic when it collided with a transport truck at the intersection of Mayfield and Airport Rds. at about 2:40pm Thursday. The force of the impact was so strong it pushed the vehicle 50 metres up onto a nearby lawn, where a memorial to the fallen duo now sits.

Vanessa died at the scene, while Isabel was transported to St. Michael's Hospital downtown in critical condition. She held on for two days but doctors weren't able to save her.

"They were respectful, they were good girls, they had so much going for them," the girls' aunt, Marianne Zenelle said.

"My sister has lost two kids ... not one, two, and we are burying two people. They did everything together, they studied together, they went to school together, so they're going to be together now in heaven."

The truck driver involved wasn't hurt. There was no word on any charges being laid in the crash.
End of Quote.
The pictures shown on TV indicate the car was making a left turn and the "transport" was a 4 axle dump trailer! It was stated on the TV News that charges are now likely against the truck driver!

It should be noted that this occurred during a week in which the OPP were conducting a blitz against speeding/unsafe operation of commercial vehicles on Southern Ont. expressways. Nearly 400 charges were laid.

And quoted in the Toronto Sun:
"There are far too many trucks on the roads," she added, pointing out that there has been an awful lot of serious accidents involving trucks recently. "How many families have to be destroyed before something is done?"

This has been an exceptionally bad summer for accidents involving trucks, OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley said.

"We're certainly concerned," he said.

Commercial vehicles are involved in about 15% of fatal collisions but so far this year it is closer to 20%, Woolley said, but pointed out that both car and truck drivers have been to blame.
End of Quote!

While I have no personal connection to this or OTHER incidents currently, I note that our industry is coming under more concerted attacks. If there are too many trucks on our roads, then how about how many cars are so necessary! Many of the day to day movements of 4 wheelers are to and from destinations close to home on an unplanned and impulse basis. What will bring John Q. Public to his senses? If a major truck boycott of Metro Toronto could occur (which it cannot) then suddenly the empty shelves, dried up fuel stations, and rationed goods and services would bring the message home! TRUCKS ARE A NECESSITY FOR OUR ECONOMY TO FUNCTION. DRIVING A CAR INTO THE PATH OF A LARGE TRUCK IS SUICIDE. IT IS TIME FOR SOCIETY TO GET A GRIP ON REALITY.

It was noted today in the Toronto Sun that about 5 witnesses have come forward stating the same thing, that the driver ran a red light. The gravel hauling portion of our industry has to do something about the way they pay the drivers who haul stone.Highway 10 is a raceway for all the diaper liners carrying stone in trucks that more than likely couldn't pass a full on inspection in they had too. They need to open the coop back up on highway 10 and get this junk and shiate off the road before more lives are lost!

And how do you do that when you know who is in Cabinet and who is funding political campaigns and lobbying where it counts? Do you know who also has the distribution contract and rights to all KW/PACCAR parts? Same person that was shuffled out of the Highways Ministry chair into the corner! Why are certain ethnics allowed "interpreters" to do their CDL tests for them? Yet those of us who have years of experience and were driver school trained are told to go back to school and pay $2500.xx for a one year license once you turn age 65. I would say more but it would be misconstrued!
The media is partly responsible for this state of affairs, too! Not one report online I have found has stated what you have above that the dirt box jockey ran a red light! Just too bad the car was not occupied by the Premier hisself!
P.S. Had brunch today at what used to be the Flying Squirrel after wife's medical appointment. I noticed that the printed newspapers no longer resemble the online versions! This another problem! We are not getting the whole story nor the full news on line. I had suspected this from the TV versions lately, too!

It is also known that the first casualty in a war is the truth. This axiom has stood the test of time since long before you and I were born! And if you think I am annoyed, you are right on the mark!

There is a petition that has been started on behalf of,
David Glenn Virgoe, who was killed June 18.07 on the 400. He was killed by racer's, if you remember. I'm trying to reach the lady of the family who has this & get it out so she can take it to Parliament.
If you see this petition to "Stop the Carnage" please sign it.
In the mean time I will find it, & get it one here.

WE, have to make it happen.

A 28-year-old dump-truck driver has been charged with criminal negligence causing the death of two Brampton sisters in a collision last week.

The charges were laid today by the Ontario Provincial Police in Caledon.

The truck collided with a car at the intersection of Mayfield Rd. and Airport Rd. last Thursday.

Isabel Diceglie, 23, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her 19-year-old sister Vanessa, who was driving, died later in hospital.

The car was in the intersection preparing to make a left turn from Mayfield Rd. onto Airport Rd. when the car was hit by a dump truck that was going southbound on Airport Rd.

The intersection is controlled by traffic lights.

Charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death is Gurjant Singh of Etobicoke. He had a bail hearing scheduled for today.
