A serious crash in Caledon from earlier in the week has turned even more tragic for a GTA family.
Isabel Diceglie, 23, succumbed to her injuries in hospital Saturday night, just days after her 19-year-old sister Vanessa was killed in the same collision. The day of the accident was Isabel's 23rd birthday.
The sisters had been travelling in a Honda Civic when it collided with a transport truck at the intersection of Mayfield and Airport Rds. at about 2:40pm Thursday. The force of the impact was so strong it pushed the vehicle 50 metres up onto a nearby lawn, where a memorial to the fallen duo now sits.
Vanessa died at the scene, while Isabel was transported to St. Michael's Hospital downtown in critical condition. She held on for two days but doctors weren't able to save her.
"They were respectful, they were good girls, they had so much going for them," the girls' aunt, Marianne Zenelle said.
"My sister has lost two kids ... not one, two, and we are burying two people. They did everything together, they studied together, they went to school together, so they're going to be together now in heaven."
The truck driver involved wasn't hurt. There was no word on any charges being laid in the crash.
End of Quote.
The pictures shown on TV indicate the car was making a left turn and the "transport" was a 4 axle dump trailer! It was stated on the TV News that charges are now likely against the truck driver!

It should be noted that this occurred during a week in which the OPP were conducting a blitz against speeding/unsafe operation of commercial vehicles on Southern Ont. expressways. Nearly 400 charges were laid.
And quoted in the Toronto Sun:
"There are far too many trucks on the roads," she added, pointing out that there has been an awful lot of serious accidents involving trucks recently. "How many families have to be destroyed before something is done?"
This has been an exceptionally bad summer for accidents involving trucks, OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley said.
"We're certainly concerned," he said.
Commercial vehicles are involved in about 15% of fatal collisions but so far this year it is closer to 20%, Woolley said, but pointed out that both car and truck drivers have been to blame.
End of Quote!
While I have no personal connection to this or OTHER incidents currently, I note that our industry is coming under more concerted attacks. If there are too many trucks on our roads, then how about how many cars are so necessary! Many of the day to day movements of 4 wheelers are to and from destinations close to home on an unplanned and impulse basis. What will bring John Q. Public to his senses? If a major truck boycott of Metro Toronto could occur (which it cannot) then suddenly the empty shelves, dried up fuel stations, and rationed goods and services would bring the message home! TRUCKS ARE A NECESSITY FOR OUR ECONOMY TO FUNCTION. DRIVING A CAR INTO THE PATH OF A LARGE TRUCK IS SUICIDE. IT IS TIME FOR SOCIETY TO GET A GRIP ON REALITY.
