I've been training a driver for the last couple of months. GET THIS!
He came to me with a recommendation of my senior driver. Problem was he had a "G" license and an appointment yesterday for his "A" endorsement.
I was leery about the deal but told him to come back after he passed his air brake endorsement.
3 days later he shows up with a "GZ" license. The man showed initiative so I authorised a week on the road with my senior guy figuring it might scare him off.
2 weeks ago he was back at my desk asking if he could show me his skills in the yard. Why not I figured I needed a break from the computer.
HE WAS AS GOOD AS any of my guys. Backed a six-axle flat into a shop bay from the blind side.
Well this one I couldn't let loose. I took him out a couple of times for 4 hour stretches.
Yesterday I took him over for his MTO road test. YEP, PASSED!!! Almost a perfect score! Everything was doing great till he cut a corner and rubbed a curb.
EXAMINER said he was going to let it slide but he's never, ever given a PERFECT TEST.
Long story short, the man did it on his own, no school of driving, lots of studying and practice and a lot of guts.
I put him on the payroll this morning. While I was doing the paperwork up, dispatch asked if I could deliver a 10 ft wide plate load to Niagara Falls. He went out, hooked, flagged, signed and chained without any instruction and it looked just like the pictures in the book.
I figured he might be intimidated by the width but he proved me wrong again.
I think I got a keeper!
Oh I forgot to tell you, last nite he went and celebrated with more than one brown pop. He was a little under the weather this morning but he was ready to give it 110%.
On the way back we loaded 88000 lbs of patio stone. I was told stay in the truck and wait till he was tied down b4 I checked on him.
Couldn't have done better myself!
