....if you were going to buy a new truck? I've been out of trucking for some time now and find I have to go back. Not that it's a bad thing or anything like that. I've really had my eye on the new Volvo's. Has anyone here had a good or bad experience with them? I like the safety features they have built into them. Like on head on collisions, the engine dives below the cab to save the drivers legs. And the drivers door staying closed in a collision, but will open after.

Depends on what you planned on using the truck for. For 5 axle highway work see my last couple of posts on the Truck and Technical Forum.

Anything with a padded steering wheel, so you don;t bruise yourself banging your head on the steering wheel in frustration.

I have heard it said on many occasions and by numerous people that the new VNL series is one of the "throw away" models that now a days flood the market. They are good until the warranty runs out then they have no resale value or trade in value. Now having said all that, I personally have driven many different VNL units since the VNLs hit the roadways. I like the comfort, the visibility, and extra space/storage compartments, etc. I did not like the Volvo track record of needing the warranty more often than other brands with the exception of the 13 letter manure spreaders. Volvos, especially with the Volvo engine which has more low end torque and VIBRATIONS wear out faster and cost more to repair, not that the others aren't expensive. The best value for money is probably the KW800 series with a 13 or 18 speed EAton and a 500 Detroit which you can no longer get since damn near Chrysler bought DDM from Pissmeoffsky! That move in my opinion is a violation of the ICC fair trade legislation on syndicates. But then it was allowed by a Bush appointed judge! All manufacturers should have access to all makes of motors for the discretion of the purchaser of their products. If you want to equip your unit with a specific motor, transmission and rear end, you should have that choice.

To tell you the truth, I'm looking to buy a truck in the next few year, i'm just carefull to see where the industry is going before making a Move.

As it would be my first truck, with a pretty small cash down (10%) I would go for a model that is less expensive, say under 130000$. So I would check for a Kenworth, perhaps the new T660, that is turning this time around 125000$ if you are carefull with putting luxury options.

But with the new DD15 of Detroitdiesel that just got out, I feel that Freightliner and Western Star will have my attention. I will sure make some test on the new Cascadia, as it's the only truck that is worth of intererrest for my on that brand.

Truck that I will DEFINITIVELY not buy it: VOLVO!!!!!!!! I drive one, it only have 272000 km, and I had a lot of trouble with that.

Internationnal Prostar: I was interrested, buy some friends of me bought one, and they all had problem of poorly assembled truck. The fuel mileage is not wha'ts been expected, etc etc etc.......

If I was Rich: I would have a nice Kenworth W900 full loaded!!!! Ah it's fun to dream

You can get JUNK with any name plate on the grille.

Have 1 O/O on with us that has had countless PETE'S , has a VOLVO and he loves it , got tired of the CRAMPED bunk and small cab space , another 1 has a WESTERN STAR he loves it as well got out of a W900 , 2 have the bare bones FREIGHTLINER century and 1 has a 9200 International they get good service out of them , I have 10 KWS , 3 MACKS , 4 VOLVOS the service side of MACK sucks especially if its a VOLVO / MACK dealership.

KW has production issues lately , you get 4 trucks 3 are ok 1 is jinxed, have 1 T660 that lives at the dealer

How's the Mack working out? With all the trouble I hear from the drivers that drive them where I work, I would be afraid to buy one. Is it Mack or Volvo power? Do you have that anti-roll feature? How's the millage?

Well, I've been driving one for the last year and have had very few issues with it. I'd like to see how the new MAN C15 engine that International is coming out with is like.

well, I am new to the whole trucking industry, and do not know much about them. But I will say that the 2009 Harley Davidson International is pretty damn sweet looking!

The HD LONESTAR is a Lot more truck and more $ than you need to worry about if your just starting out. Best rule of thumb is buy WHAT you need at a $ you can afford then work up to the show truck.

Take a look in AUTO TRADER plenty of fancy trucks for sale , repo lots are full of them as well.

I don't know enough about trucks to pick the best one for my requirements. But then I've never wanted to own my own truck, anyway, so it's kind of a moot point. I'll just drive whatever the company I'm working for assigns to me.

But if I won the lottery, there'd be an HD Lonestar and a special RV trailer to haul my Harleys with sitting in my driveway. Ya gotta have dreams, right?

I like kw T800 and Pete 379, i would not run long haul anymore, but i think a KW T 800 with the longer cab, would be my dream mixer or dump truck!

Another long nose, flat top Pete.

Its gotta look like a truck, not like a Japanese version of some reptile. I like the smaller sleeper, easier to heat and cool and I don't have dance parties anyway .........

I agree with Pipeman. I've always been a die-hard Cat man, but since the accert came out, I would have to say "anything but".

For the price of replacing the twin Turbos I can in frame an ISX for just $2,000. more.

why did cat make all engines have twin turbos anyway??

seems like they turned off alot of customers by doing that.

Pollution control BS. The heat output under the hood is so high that I've seen the windshield wiper juice container melt to the liquid line.

Wiring fried etc.

Another good reason to keep my old 2003 pre-emission C15 and just rebuild it when the time comes.I've never been a big cummins fan, drove lots of them back in the 70's and 80's but never owned one.

you guys think the 04 and up motors are bad for emmisions junk, look an an 09, all the junk they have on them, and i think the 2010 or 2011 motors will be worse with that DEF fluid needing to be added to it. just another thing to buy all the time.

Anything but a Peterbilt. Loud and cramped inside, and otherwise outdated by around 20 years, they are. The mirrors shake in the wind and won't stay clean, and the windshield washer doesn't work well over 60 km/hr. That is all I can remember about Peterbilts right now, except that they are pretty from the outside. But not pretty enough by a long shot to overcome their deficiencies.

I like my Volvo, and I like International 9300's with set back steering axles. I'll rebuild my 12.7L Detroit before buying a current offering, and just keep getting 10 - 15% further on my fuel that the Cat guys do...

But, yeah. Gven choice and an unlimited budget I'd pick a new T600 if it could be spec'ed to fit my requirements.

Too bad they don't sell glider kits like they used to. Now, that would be something; a T600 with my old engine, all dolled up...
