Due to the nature of my job, I'm occasionally required to hop out of one unit into another part way through a shift. My question is, what is the most correct way to log this? What I've been doing is tracking everything all on one page. I'll flag the p/t and switch to the new unit and track the mileage down in the comments section and use a seperate DVIR page for the new unit. One of our other drivers insists that you need a new logbook for each unit. Anyone have any opinions?

I used to do that sometime's too.
I would only use one log book, just write all the plate numbers and total milage for each truck down i would think, and seperate inspection report on each truck.

it does get confusing! stupid paperwork

The required information to be entered from the Ontario Regulations, Hours of Service, Section 19

8. The number plate of each commercial motor vehicle to be driven and each trailer to be drawn by the driver on the day.

It's also my understanding that if you get caught with 2 logs for the same day you could be in big trouble

That's what I've been doing so far. It doesn't happen very often, but one day I did:

Do my regular thing

Run a quickie load in the 5 ton

Go to Tandet and fetch a tractor back from service

Go to Ottawa Trailer and fetch another tractor back from service

Go to Penske and pick up a rental, run it across town to a driver

Take *that* rental back to Penske

Someone really needs to design a logbook with a BIG 24 hour grid for days like that.

Point to point moves within the same city (Ottawa) may be all logged on-duty thus you don't have to go all over the grid. Remember that Nepean is Nepean...not Ottawa.

Hmm....there's a question. Does the MTO recognize Ottawa as Ottawa post-amalgamation?

MTO recognizes what ever the "legal" city name is. If Penske, Tandet etc have a mailing address that says "Ottawa" then it's all good.
