Hi folks,

I just passed my 1A the other day and am in the process of looking for a job as a company driver. In the meantime, I want to build up a little experience, since I only have about twenty hours of seat time so far.

I am thinking about offering my services to some local outfits to haul a couple of trailers in the next couple of weeks with a rented truck. Initially I thought I would just rent a truck and practice my driving (shifting, really), but after some thought, decided to go this other route instead.

What I would like to know is how to cost my little temporary operation. I don't expect to make money on this, but if I can avoid coming out in the red, then I will be happy.

The only cost I know is the rental price. Penske rents trucks for about $160/day + $0.07/km. I'm not sure about gas mileage (let's assume the worst and that I will be driving the Hope-Princeton highway).

Ideally, I will be able to find something within close enough that I can be out and back within my HOS limits. Vancouver to Kamloops, say.

If anybody can give me some advice on this matter, or anything really, since I could have missed something obvious, then I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance,
Ed

BAD IDEA!! Can't be any nicer but it's a TERRIBLE idea.

Cargo insurance, operating authority are two things you don't have.

You need time with a trainer not by yourself.

Keep pounding the doors, something will turn up.

Cargo insurance and operating authority I definitely don't have. I don't even know what the second one is. Thanks for the help!

Actually Operating Authoties no longer exist. What replaced it is the National Safety Code Certificate.

(Unless ON has O/A hidden somewhere)

Quebec still requires an NIR #...it's a form of authority or registration I believe.

Ontario has thrown a monkey wrench into the CVOR system which carriers/fleets are required to have. They NOW must be re-newed! Another ploy by the OTA I am sure!
