After spending a lot of time driving Europe last year, and getting laid off this jan, I want a job.
And I want a job in Canada. Anyone know of any companies that would take on someone with 18 months UK/European experience, plus 6 months US/Canadian and fund me to come over?
I've been unemployed for 9 months now, and cash is tight. I just want a long haul gig with a decent tractor that can do 70mph or so when legal that has room for me to live in. Preferably 90%+ no-touch freight in reefers/vans, but I'm willing to learn how to do flats.
I know that most Canadians want to get home at weekends, but I wouldn't (assuming it's a decent sized sleeper).
My perfect job would be real long haul stuff, with a volvo 780 that has a decent engine and a manual roadranger with 13 or more gears, running solo.

You are going to find it tough for a foreign national to find work here in Canada or the US right now. There are so many qualified drivers out of work that it ain't funny.
That said, take a look at the big companies such as Challenger, Yanke, or Bison. They might be willing to take a look at you.

Big Freight in Manitoba hires a lot of drivers from Europe. They are a flat deck company with KW T800s. I beleive they even may have recruiters in Europe. They are a little slow like everybody else though.

Big freight doesn't look too good from where I sit, I've heard a number of bad stories about them from a couple of drivers I know that hired on with them.

I don't mean to be a dick or nothing but this is so true. I don't know you OP and I am sure you are a nice guy but if i hear of a company paying to bring guys from out of country I'll lose it.. just like I have lost everything else other then the roof over my head thanks to my brother.:broke:

I don't think this is in the work's now due to the economy.
A company will look @ what is in his back yard, before looking outside it.
It's very costly to bring & train a driver from another country.

I'll give them a call, probably in the new year, give you local guys a chance at having all these "wonderful*" jobs first.
*wonderful in this case, means long haul work, at at least 10% less than any Canadian would consider worth the effort of getting out of bed, with dispatchers keen to push you way past your legal hours.
