alright. i'll start this one.
I just received a union contract and it states:
Every drive in SGT must be a paying member to gain and remain employed.
we do not have the right to strike or form picket lines.
benefits can be taken away if there are money shortages in the company.
we still got drivers with under 6 months experience going to texas while a driver with 3 years experience only goes to new england , ontario and quebec.
I conclude, The Teamsters are powerless in SGT.
I will also add. they are not welcome by most of the sgt drivers and we are trying to find out how to fight this disease that took over this good company. we are trying to get rid of jimmy hoffa's mafia. this is a fine company to work for even though we make less than challenger and those pumpkins. challenger is hiring now and i wont leave. the vast majourity of the people here are the best. we are a big company but we are like family. its a great atmospere here.
Dont do those big letters- they are annoying as are caps locks.

you want to make it far in a company? a union is not the answer. a strong good attitude is the answer. respect is something you earn not something you are entitled to. even though you dont have to earn my respect. if the company is crooked or unfair you must leave. but most places award hard work. if they dont, they wont last very long
its all about attitude

I agree, some people might get upset when guys with lower seniority get all the good runs and treated the best, but maybe there is a reason for that.
Maybe they are really a good worker with a good attitude
seniority isn't always the best way to decide what driver gets what job or run to do.

No matter what type of attitude you have, or how hard you work there will still come a time when you will be treated with disrespect when it is not warranted in any company, Union or no.
What the Union does is puts you back on a level playing field, even if only perceived.
One thing I have learned over the years with working in Union and non Union companies is that it will always be a popularity contest.

Youre right, senority wont mean nothing in some companies, sometimes when a driver comes up and is ready to sacrifice part of his or her pay, they will go out on a good run.
I guess, it could be called a good attitude.....

I said it before on the other threads, and I will say it again now. A really well run company wont get unionized. Smart bosses avoid the threat of unionization by being pro-active and respecting good workers AND seniority if they can. I would prefer to work in such a workplace.
That said, from what I have seen in the trucking industry, about half the companies out there don't do this, and deserve to have a union there to defend the guys working there. That said, truckers as a rule do NOT want unions.
So when I look at SGT WITH the union, I say "what happened to drive those guys to it?"....and I know what it likely was. People getting screwed over for runs, people getting the short shrift on pay or holidays, getting unfair (or perceived unfair treatment) over dedicated routes or new trucks. The reasons really do not matter, but what matters it the majority of the workers there in an open and free vote decided to vote FOR a Union. Big step...
Challenger is now undergoing a lot of this. I will say again, I don't think it will happen, but when I saw people like Liner actively campaigning on this board with out and out fabricated ideas on what the Teamsters are or are not, I wondered about just what is going on at Challenger.
I was a union steward for 2 and a half years. The Verspeeten Cartage I started with was unionized and fighting it with the labour board for 13 years and never won. They spent over a Million dollars on legal fees for themselves and the unions in various appeals. They screwed people around every chance they got when I was there, and when the union was finally imposed, none of the original card signers were left and we were all working through agencies. We could be fired at the drop of a hat, and harassment from management was early and often if you stood up for yourself. In short, the union coming was a BLESSING......This employer never got it,and I hope the Teamsters make their lives hell until they grasp that the guy driving the truck is an asset, not something to be beat on for ego gratification.
In the real world we don't get treated fairly, and sometimes effort is NOT recognized. Screw enough people long enough, and you get them signing union cards. Doesn't take a rocket scientest to figure out how to beat it, yet in Trucking, bad management is often just too focused on other issues....

man, you only got one argument. what you are payed is an agreement made between you and your employer. your rate is an agreement not an entitlement:flyswat[1]:.

we hire and lose 3 drivers a week just in brampton. we are constantly hiring. its been like this for a long time. drivers are constantly quitting because the union is so great in providing fairness.:bath:

Yes sir, in case you guys didnt notice, one track mind.
And I'll repeat it again and again and again.
Guys and gals who are ready to cut rates in order to have an edge have been hurting this industry.
Companies are yelling "say no to cheap freight" it's the same problem with cheap drivers.
That clear enough?????
And I'm not the only one who thinks like that.
Here's an reply from another post......

Don't get me started, to many driver's are settling for what their offering, this is a touchy subject for me.I know what I'm worth and I won't settle for what most company's are paying.http://www.truckstopcanada.ca/forum/images/smilies/8_4_53%5B1%5D.gif

again may i point out that life isn't fair- get used tom it and grow up. whining will get you nowhere. and if i feel i'm overpaid, thats my choice. i dont need some socialist dictating what i should and should not do and how i much i get paid, when i am and am not tired, what i should or should not eat, what i should wear, what i listen too, and what im supposed to say. this is supposed to be a free country but little whining liberals will never grow up and make there own decisions. because of that, we, the people who aren't affraid to live on our own and screw up occasionally as long as we can learn where we went wrong are losing our rights to a bunch of MOMMY'S BOYS. they need mommy to protect them and to fight there battles for them. dont have the balls to stand up for themselves.
all you little snowflake children are ruining this great country.

hey if you want to be like you say soooo independant and choose your own fate... go for it.
I dont actually care if you keep bending down and prostitute yourself and work for free.
It's your life, it's your rear end.
The problem I have is that by beeing sooo independant and choosing to cut rates, you are killing the salaries and like it or not, this is the major reason why we all are in trouble.
If you want to be soooo independant, buy your own truck and trailer, get your own authority and charge whatever you want.
Lets see how long your line of thinking will take you in this business.
In the wall my friend.
it has nothing to do with socialist, unions or anything else.
Now who needs to grow up here?????

thats the plan when i get the cash. and you know what?
1.I'm gonna hire cheap labour- probably a lot of new Canadians.
2.once we get unionized, I shut down the company and start a new one.
3. i reward hard-working employees and remember favours.
4.seniority will mean nothing to me.
5. respect will be granted at 90%. its up to you to gain or lose it.
6. maybe i will call my company: Pakin transport
