View Full Version : Satellite radio antenna placement

Ok here is another question.
Driving an 06 Volvo with an "aero" package made out of fiberglass and plastic. I have had a hard time finding any metal that I can put my satellite radio antenna onto. Right now it is on the mirror support on the passenger side and holds on pretty tight there. BUT when driving North, Northeast or Northwest, I get tons of dropout on my radio. I am assuming this is because my trailer is blocking the signal.
Without making major modifications to the truck (not mine), can anyone suggest where I should be placing my antenna to get the best all around reception?
TIA

You can pick up one of those mirror mounted antenna's, or bend a small piece of tin that can be attached to the cab in a place of better signal. If you move on you can leave it there for the next guy or remove it if you put the extra effort in to making something unique.

Find a place in the cab/bunk and fasten it up near the roof.Mine sits on the top shelf in the bunk and works fine.

I know not to place it on the rotating beacon mounts, every wide load cut out the tunes...lol
I built a small "U" shaped bracket, and mounted it to one of the visor support mounts, just above the windshield. I inverted the bracket downward and used self tapping screws to attatch to the visor mount. This give a flat surface (2" x 2") to lay the small magnetic radio antenna. Make your bracket long enough to have the antenna sitting just above the visor level. I just tucked the wire under the rubber edge of the windshield moulding and in through the passenger door frame. Its not the best looking way to run a wire. But it gets the job done. I'll try to get a couple of pics posted.

Seems to me I replied to this thread or one similar recently but they say that at my age, the memory is the second thing to go. I improved my reception a whole bunch by mounting the factory issue magnetic antenna from XM on one of Mrs RJ's cookie sheets and placing it on the overhead shelf above the dash (Frtliner Columbia). I got the best reception when I bought one of those aftermarket mushroom antennas from a Pilot and mounted it on the right side mirror arm.
