In Manitoba you do NOT need to go to school. It is recommended, but if you can find someone to train you and you can pass the tests (written, pre-trip, air and driving) then they will give you a Class 1 license.

You don't need to go to school to get either an AZ or DZ license. It is recommended for both though. A straight truck is much more than a pick-up on steroids! Handling that thing in traffic is tricky too!

It is not law, but if he does not he will have a rough time finding work as insurance will be high.

I never went to trucking school, and i got my AZ on my own in 2003, and never really had a problem finding a job, my age was the biggest issue at the time. I was only 18 with no experience.

Tell him to go for the test in a uhaul or rented truck with hydraulic brakes, this will get him a D lic, truck needs a certain wgt rating. Air endorsement is a written test only and will be added to a D lic.

that might work for the D, but to get a Z you must bring in a truck with air brakes for the practical air brake test, as well as do the written test.

also for D licence, the truck must be registered for more then 11000 kg's which if its a u haul, it likely won't be!

for the A restricted any trailer registered or weighing more then 4600 kg's must be used.

for the full A licence, the trailer must be over 4600 kg GVW, 45 feet long, with air brakes, and a a fifth wheel hitch, as well as the truck must be manual transmission.
