My name is Craig Cooper and I am a Volvo D16 victim.

For years the local Volvo Dealer in Barrie Ontario was trying to persuade us to try the “Volvo experience” and repeatedly we chose something else. Well circumstances change, and it was advantageous to purchase a truck with an automated transmission. After test-driving them all the Volvo automated functioned best. Consequently we took delivery of a 2008 VN780, D16, 535hp, (vin# 263072) in January 2008. This truck replaced our existing truck on at Versa Cold #244.

In the first 4 weeks of having this truck it spent 3 weeks in the shop, and this was just the beginning. Over the next 2 years the truck spent an additional 16 weeks down for repairs, and this is not counting the day here or there lost waiting for parts that were never in stock, this “not in stock” reality was the same regardless of the part, and regardless of the size of the dealer. And without exception Volvo Parts were always over priced and of a substandard quality. Volvo was so unreliable and that the only thing that could be counted on was that it would break down and the parts would not be in stock.

My experience is not any different than others that I have talked to. This D16 that Volvo promoted and sold as the their flagship engine, the finest engine money could buy, was known by Volvo in advance to be defective and they sold them to customers knowing that the deficiencies in this LEMON would financially devastate hundreds, and perhaps thousands of small operators.

In the first 2 years our Volvo ate up more than $34,000. in unexpected repairs not covered by warranty, and Volvo did warranty covered repairs totalling more than $70,000.

Simply, I have never in my life had the misfortune of dealing with a company that from sales to corporate was so disreputable, unscrupulous, incredulous, and virtually criminal as I had with Volvo. If I can make it my life’s mission, I will take every opportunity to convince everyone that will listen to avoid anything Volvo like they would avoid the plague.

Let me be absolutely clear and up front here. We will share on request any and all maintenance records for this LEMON, and extensive details of the experience. Just send me a request for info note to versa244@live.com and I will forward via return mail and PDF file.

That's not a Volvo. That's a VULVA you bought and they don't come cheap...

What's with the thread title? LOL.. Anyways, Pipeman might be correct. The one that you bought might only have a volvo parts (http://www.thepartsbin.com/guides/volvo.html) and not purely a VOLVO.

I had purchased a used Volvo with a Cummins in it, and I can tell you that this truck sent almost all of its time in a shop, I took the motor out and put it in my Freightliner wired it up and presto no further problems. And a friend of mine had Volvo with a Volvo motor and again nothing but trouble. These companies should be held accountable for all lost time and maybe will pay closer attention to their product.

Wow this is exactly my expierence with my first truck that I bought, 1980 International Eagle with a 400 big cam. Cummins even admitted there was a design flaw but too bad. Repo man came to get it, but I fought, begged and borrowed more money to keep going. Wished many times I had just let it go.

Reminds me of the 'Volvo experience' I had once. Did a run out to Calgary as a favour for the brother of the owner of a company I used to work for. had a NICE '03 670 with the table in the bunk, 13 speed Fuller. Fairly basic when it came to options but a pretty nice and comfortable truck. Except for the intermittent engine shutdowns for no apparent reason at any time it felt like. Gave you all of 30 seconds to get off the road safely before the darn thing shut down completely. Nursed it to Volvo in Calgary, spent 5 days in the shop, over $7500 bill. Problem not fixed and the dealership was told to release the truck.

I started back to Ontario. Truck shut down 124 times on #11 in just over 24 hours. Got it back home and had the owner tow it back to Ajax and another driver pick up the load for delivery. Never heard any more about that truck. I think it should have been scrapped. Not sure if the owner ever bothered to even try to get it back on the road again or not. I swore I would take my '08 Pete back, it had issues but still made money.

Well, I sure like my Volvo. It is 11 years old, has a rebuilt power train and recently has been getting 8 - 10 mpg, depending on what goes on the deck.

Before you buy a Volvo, file bankruptcy first. That way you ahead of the game.
