The two puppies are recovering, but a Humane Society spokesperson said they probably went without food for up to two weeks.

After seeing three puppies roaming around the Tsuu T’ina landfill, two Calgary men say they couldn’t get the image out of their heads.

Paul, a driver for a soil trucking company, said he was dropping off a load at the landfill when he saw a pickup truck with two females speeding away.

“As they drove away, there was three dogs behind,” he said. “I really felt sick to my stomach.”

Paul and his co-worker Orist Tchozewski went back multiple times throughout the day and despite attempts to lure them with food, they were unable to catch the skittish puppies.

Finally, after they finished work Wednesday afternoon, the two managed to find two of three puppies.

“As luck would have it, they were down at the bottom of one of the mounds (of dirt)…When I first found them, I couldn’t believe it. I just raised my head to the sky. It was unbelievable.”

They put them in dresser drawers and wrapped them in towels to take to the Calgary Humane Society.
