CENTRAL ELGIN, Ont. – Local officials in this southwestern Ontario town want to begin formal discussions with the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority regarding the launch of a ferry service between Port Stanley and Cleveland.
The municipal council in Central Elgin, Ont. passed a resolution that supports further discussions with Cleveland port officials.
The original proposal was for a ferry service that would be used primarily by cross-border trucks. But recent discussions have lead to a shift in thinking about the type of vessel that would be used. A pilot program would likely focus on tourism and recreation, with truck traffic a smaller part of the mix. In addition a smaller vessel capable of traveling at faster speeds would likely be used.
For whatever reason trucking never seems to embrace ferry crossings except when there is no other way. I think their thought process about 4 wheelers being the prominent users has merit. Heck, I could drive an hour to the lake, go to the ""Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" at the mistake on the lake (Cleveland), take the ferry back across and drive an hour, be home and get all that done in ONE day. If the ferry was $100 for a car it would still cost me less than the alternative which is a 4 1/2 hour drive each way, two days and a motel room.
Count me in as a potential supporter!
Could we fish off the ferry?
