On the CTV Evening News they played a clip from the program W5 that will be aired tonight Sat. 03 Mar.'07 about the current epidemic of cargo thefts and stolen commercial trucks at 19:00 hours (07:00PM) on the CTV Network stations. The cargo heists are topping 1 billion dollars and costing everyone more money for insurance payments! They interview incognito a known convicted yeg who is still active and has multiple convictions. I know this show will be of interest to all of us as it will demonstrate how vulnerable we are. At one of my recent employers, a load was stolen from the yard using our city tractor to take the trailer parked near me as I slept in my rig with the engine idling. If I had awoken and gotten involved I might not be here telling you about this! The product stolen probably would be flogged at flea markets 2 or 3 provinces away. There are no serial numbers on kids plastic toys!

I saw this CTV W5 report! Holy Cow! That's scary stuff! Was chatting to few Albertans who had seen it too......they dont come as far east as the Toronto/Mtl corridor. They also say it is nothing like that out west.
I am not yet OTR, this might be good for a rookie or wannabe to watch. Trick here may be to keep your eyes open up & down the hwy for yourself & ppl u know and YOUR MOUTH SHUT at all times. MUMS the word!
Every trucker in Canada should have watched this. Well worth it!

I meant to ask how it was, as I was @ the surprise dinner for my b-day where I was told I looked like poop.
Let's here some more on the story they did.

Sorry Holly, I only presumed you had watched it.
CTV did good job reporting the hijackings of loads and the loss of $$ in the industry. They indicated that they happen between the Toronto/Montreal corridor. I wonder if this is exclusive to that area. They reported on one particular case where a driver went missing from a truck stop in the Belleville, Ontario area and was murdered for his $40K load of chicken. They interviewed his wife and his best OTR buddy, who described searching the hwy for him and waiting for him. My heart goes out to his widow.
The reporter also interviewed a disguised fella who has been convicted serveral times of this & is still active in the organized crime. He described it to be relatively easy and very profitable. From all indications, I gather that they just keep doing it because the penalites/punishment is never severe enough.
The segment on the industry was well done. Sometimes CTV will re-run these shows, especially if they are of interest to the public safety and the economy.

Briefly, this is not exclusive to this corridor. And not all of the thefts are reported in the media. That one was becasue of the death, which is highly regrettable. There are other reports lately of truck and trailer thefts in Toronto, and in one case they reported a name of a young man wanted inconnection with numerous heists. He is only 19 or 21 was it.
We need a more logical approach to criminal sentencing in Canada! Repeat offenders need to be sent to an Arctic Island for life!

I didnt suspect that this exclusive to this corridor. It is a damn shame that the industry faces these types hardships. The drivers face too many other hardships to become victims of this double edged sword.......the criminal and insurance side of things.
It is a sad day for everyone in the industry when a life is lost.

That it is Cheryl, but Joe public doesn't care.
Everyday a driver is found dead in his trk or near it. Not just from beign robbed or killed, but alsom heart attacks & illnesses. Joe public doesn't want to hear this side of trucking.
