OTTAWA - A Conservative senator is in hot water for saying Wednesday that murderers should be given a rope in their cell in case they want to hang themselves.
The senator also targeted the three members of the Shafia family convicted in the first-degree murders of four family members, saying he'd like to see them sent back to Afghanistan instead of a "more comfortable" jail here.
"The Shafias, the three in jail, it'll cost $10 million to Canadian taxpayers," he said. "We don't put that $10 million elsewhere, we use it on criminals with no possibility of rehabilitation."
