I would like any feedback anyone can give.I am interested in
acquiring a new volvo vn780 tractor .Has anyone had experience
with the D-16 engine and the I-shift auto trans. or should I continue
using the ISX cummins and 18 eaton fuller?

Briefly, I heard 5 years ago that the automatic trnsmission out pulled the 18 speed with identical 55o Detroits in heavily loaded rigs running from Edmonton to Alaska, but what were the rear ends, I don't know and were they the same chassis/cab configuration? I think is was not.
I recommend that you research the engineering data if it is available from independant authorities not the truck mfg's. (Look for an unbiased source, if there is such!)

those volvo tractors ar pure class if you make the purchase you will have great ride i am sure as for the i - shift i would recomend it the company i work for in ireland do a lot of international work in europe mainly hauling beef in reefers and live cattle to feed lots any drivers i have spoke to on the cb have mentioned the i -shift and have nothing but praise especially in italy as the country has some serious mountains i got a ride in one of those volvos in the states i have a friend that runs for us express and all there trucks are i-shift great when youre stuck on an american interstate its a shame those volvos are actually heavier than a kenworth or peterbilt as i enquired while i was in canada as why so many bull haulers were riding about in kenworths macks and petes the volvo was just to heavy but a real class tractor those sweedish engineers really know how to construct a vechile good luck on your purchase friend are you going to add a moose bar to the front of the tractor just to finish the package of

Thanks for the reply IRELAND the volvo is a wonderful truck to drive
all the comfort you could ask for. A moose bar or newfie speed bump
bar is also on the order. I don't know if you have seen the vest
stabilization system on the volvos at work but should be manditory
on all trucks. Your local volvo dealer show be able you the system at work,it controls rollover and eliminates sudden manouver jack knifes
on frozen and snow covered roads the yaw and pitch sensors
take over and the system takes control of throttle and ABS system It is truly amazing to see in action. the local dealer says it is available on Canadian units but not sure of US models.

The assembly line is at Christiansburg, Virginia just to the West side of I-81, so I would expect that it is just a matter of ordering it, and having a dealer with technicians trained to service it! I was told over the phone one day when I had to call the head office in North Carolina, that I should stop in and visit their displays in the lobby at Greensboro, N.C., like dispatch would allow me that kind of out route and time! Should have done it as now I will never get the chance!
