Had a driver ask me what that term meant. For ALL you new drivers that means RUN AWAY FAST.
What is being offered is usually a mileage rate in cash or a percentage rate in cash, you pay ALL your own taxes and other deductions including Workmans Comp. RUN RUN

I was told several years ago that this is an illegal method for hiring drivers now under Canada Revenue Authority rules according to my tax Accountant. He was formerly a supervisor at Revenue Canada and now as an independent CPA acts as a consultant to several Rev. Can. Dept.s.
It boils down to you that must own or lease a truck to be an independent operator to be allowed to file your business taxes and withholdings. Who ever hires you as an independent driver is breaking the Rev. Can. rules and will be audited and fined as well as assessed the owing withholdings. Such a job advert should get your alarm bells ringing and your mind looking for what else the company is trying to short cut on!
I used to work as an independent through an agency when it was still legal because your were allowed to make more deductions just as if you were a business, but that went out the window when Rev. Can. won some court cases that got it shut down!
GET COMPETENT ADVICE FROM A RESPECTED PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTANT OR REVENUE CANADA BEFORE YOU TAKE ON SUCH A POSITION. The next bankruptcy maybe the company you are owed wages from after Rev. Canada audits them and assesses the proper filing fines and fees owing.
Rev. Canada has dibs on the money before you do!

This practice is still going on, the young fellow I was talking to is an E.I. and it was a fellow country man of his doing the offering.
